the Watch & Jewellery recruiter

Who is Jolyon and who are Jolyon Marshall Limited – the Watch & Jewellery recruiter

Industry insight has never been more important as retailers, brands, wholesalers, and workshops look to navigate the difficulties and complications of recruiting for positions within the watch and jewellery trade.

With a wealth of knowledge and experience Jolyon is frequently asked to give his commercial insight on a business’ path to attract and retain the best candidates, while those same candidates will also lean on the insight from Jolyon and his team at JML to guide and best advise them on their career journey.

That aside, Jolyon is here to answer a few pertinent (and a few off-piste) questions about his time working within the watch and jewellery trade.

Q&As

1.       What is your most memorable placement – My first placement that I ever made was for BRITA in September 1988 and it was for one of their first ever Sales Representatives – I was fascinated by their hobby, that of being an accomplished Dalilah grower.

2.       How long have you been working in the Jewellery trade – The only non-trade role I had was perhaps a time when training at Harrods Ltd and when I first moved into FMCG with Cadbury Ltd. Every other working day has been within the Jewellery business.

3.       Why the Jewellery trade and specifically jewellery jobs? – Love the people, product and all the fascinating routes to market – the bright lights, the manufacturing speciality, and the branding to me is all intoxicating.

4.       What made you set up your own recruitment business – Having 24 years with one much admired consumer goods (food & non-food) recruitment consultancy, when the owner retired it was the natural next step.

5.       Has recruitment changed since you started in the trade – Beyond recognition. All applications were via telephone (then progressed the excitement of receiving a faxed CV) to today’s digital more immediate world.

6.       Is there anything a job seeker should do that will help them get noticed Most memorable CV received came via the post with a sparkler attached!

7.       Why barn animals – We revel in being fully in the countryside here at Rotten Row Farm and our building here used to be a cowshed – it’s fitting that we celebrate our location difference and respect those working the estates that surround us.

8.       Can job seekers send you their CV – Absolutely! I’m the CV reader – every sent document is always an irresistible read priority. You can upload your CV directly to the JML website today for our review.

9.       Do you specialise in any one section of the trade – All trade jobs across Retail, Workshop, Wholesale and HQ /Hybrid working roles. We are Watch & Jewellery career placement specialists. (Search current jewellery jobs on our website www.jolyonmarshall.com)

10.   Do you have any retailer tips looking for their next perfect candidate? – Actually a tip for anyone – ask someone who knows. It costs nothing and it can save you time and enrich your decision making.

11.   How important is a job description – Very often we don’t always receive them – it’s assumed I know all! – however it is hugely helpful for all parties to receive formalised insight – more detail the better in my book. We often consult with our clients to give them the latest feedback on market conditions, in some instances they may not have had the need to hire for a watchmaker position for several years!

12.   What should someone not ask at an interview? – On a previous application I made Jolyon, did you place my ex-wife’s new partner in the job that I also applied for…
